Washington DC

Officially founded on July 16, 1790, Washington, DC is unique among American cities because it was established by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capital [http://washington.org/about-washington-dc]

My visit to Washington seemed like the express train. My friend and I left New York on Friday evening on our way to Washington DC. It was our first visit to the capital and most exciting of all, her first visit to the northern hemisphere!!! We synchronized our visit with the blooming of the cherry blossoms [all right then it was all coincidental], however we were on a mission to ensure we did not leave Washington with a photo of ourselves and the blooming trees – for our dearest Aunty back in Canberra!!

As we only had 5 hours to walk around Capitol Hill, we did not make it into the museums. But the feeling of excitement and awe was so present as we walked past the monuments which we once only  knew from watching the movies. Forrest Gump crossing Lake Lincoln, the Statue of Abraham Lincoln sitting on a chair, the White House, the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial,  The United States Navy Memorial and Iwo Jima Memorial.During our visit, families were flying kites by the number at the Washington Memorial – there were kites of all sizes and shape. 

Our visit ended at 17h00 -we had accomplished our mission by having our photos taken with the cherry blossoms and also came across a field of rugby players which made us feel like we were back in Canberra. 

One day in the Nation's capital made us think we might have to spend a week so we can see the Museums next time! At least my friend got to visit Washington DC and not only NYC.
